Races

There are many races of beings on Harshlands, and whether it is fortune or unfortunate, this web page only has room for the major races that players will encounter or play on the mud. These races can be broken down into three basic groups:

Player Character Races

Human Harnic
Human Ivinian
Human Jarin
Human Kath

Special Player Character Races

Khuzdul
Sindarin

Non-PC Races

Gargun
Human Pagaelin
Human Tulwyn
Ivashu

As the names would suggest, the first group is available to anyone during character creation, as these races are easier to role-play and are also much more common on the Isle of Hârn.

The second group should only be chosen if you have obtained prior permission from the Harshlands Staff. Sindarin and Khuzdul PCs are much harder to role-play than the other human races, and players should have a solid understanding of the World before they play one of these races. If you believe you would qualify as a player for one of these races, send an email to one of the members of the Staff.

The final group consists of races which are not playable by players. Most PCs will most likely encounter them at some point in their travels, so it is a good idea to read this section just to get a general idea of what these races are.

Civilized Humans

Humans, by far, are the most common race, and are the most open for players. Humans, naturally, come in many different cultures, each of which has a worldview distinct enough to be considered a separate race. The major human cultures are the Harnic, Ivinian and Jarin races.

Barbarian Tribes

A large number of barbarian tribes inhabit Hârn, and while most tribes are warlike, others are for the most part peaceful. Hunting and gathering are the main means of sustenace, but some tribes possess rudimentary knowledge of agriculture. Most barbarians believe in animism(as do many "civilized" Hârnians), and many tribes worship the same gods as other people, albeit with differet names.

While the average traveler may well encounter a variety of tribes in his or her travel (Pagaelin, Tulwyn, etc), the only ones that may be played are the Kath.

The Elder Folk

There are two major non-human races on Hârn that are available for use as player characters - Khuzdul and Sindarin. They are known collectively as the "elder folk" by most humans.

Non-Player Races

Hârn is occupied by a large variety of races, but not all are available to players. During one's travels one may come across a number of these races, some of which are humanoid and others which are not. Some of these are quite friendly, while others would most likely rather eat someone they encounter than talk with them. The following races are the ones that have the highest possibility of being encountered; Gargun, and Ivashu.
